Announcement: Chinese New Year Success & Achievement Announcements!

Following in the footsteps of the Tsuruoka Karate founder, the Tsuruoka NL family started a tradition last year that is somewhat similar to Kagami biraki ( traditional ceremony which literally translates to “Opening the Mirror”).  However, following his own Chinese heritage, Sempai Au has also equated it to the Chinese New Year.  It is a celebration for all the students and families to come together to enjoy great food, and even greater company.

Again this year, Sempai, and his wife Cindy spent tireless hours over the weekend preparing food for approximately 90 people, and as I am sure everyone will agree, it was a huge success yet again.  A special thank you to Randy Carew for your assistance Saturday evening, as the additional set of hands helped ease the workload.  Everyone gathered at the dojo on Sunday evening for a great meal, to which no one walked away hungry.  To everyone that showed up, and assisted in anyway, a big thank you!  We hope to continue the tradition every year.

After the meal, Sempai announced that two students traveled to Toronto this past fall for grading, and he was pleased to announce the results.  Congrats to Bernie Noseworthy on your achievement of 4th dan, and to Alex Lawlor, on his achievement of dan (black belt).  The entire Tsuruoka NL Family is proud of your hard work and dedication to the club, and the sport!

Alex Lawlor (dan) and Bernie Noseworthy (4th dan)!

Our Deepest Condolences……

Tsuruoka NL would like to express our sincerest condolences to the Delaney family with the sudden passing of their daughter Melissa.  Melissa was a former student of Tsuruoka NL Karate until recent, and we are all saddened with her passing.  You will always be remembered for your quiet ways, and yet a smile that could light the room.  On behalf of all Tsuruoka NL members past and present, may your rest in peace!

Melissa

7th Commonwealth Karate Championships

The 7th Commonwealth Karate Championships were held this past weekend (October 11-14, 2013)  in Quebec City, Quebec.  The Commonwealth Karate Championship is an international event sanctioned by the Commonwealth Karate Federation. It is part of various endeavours aimed at achieving inclusion of karate in the official program of the Commonwealth Games. Karate federations from Commonwealth countries are invited to send their National teams and other athletes to participate in this high-level tournament, provided they are members in good standing of the World Karate Federation and the Commonwealth Karate Federation.

Tsuruoka NL sent two competitors to the competition.  Andrew Au and Samantha Au both represented our club, and we would like to extend out congrats to both members for a great performance.  Samantha was awarded a silver medal in individual kata, and Andrew placed fifth in his individual kata division.  Way to go!

The final medal count is in for the Newfoundland team, and it was indeed a success.

  • 21 Gold Medals
  • 14 Silver Medals
  • 21 Bronze Medals

A special thank you to Rodney Hobson, and the RHKA for hosting the event, and for inviting us in to your dojo to train with you.  It was greatly appreciated by everyone here at Tsuruoka NL.  As well, it was a fantastic job in the running of the tournament, ensuring all events ran as smooth as possible.  You and your team should be proud of your efforts.

On another note, the Tsuruoka NL team would like to extend a huge congrats to our very on Sempai Wing Au, who was awarded his 8th dan at the banquet held Saturday evening.  He was presented this award from David Tsuruoka in the absence of Sensei Tsuruoka.  Everyone in the Tsuruoka NL organization know of the personal effort that Sempai Au puts in to our organization, both locally, and nationally, and as well for the sport of karate, and we feel that this award is definately justified.  Congrats Sempai!!!!

Challange Accepted!!!!

To all Tsuruoka NL students, it seems that the students of Sensei Rodney Hobson of Kelowna have accepted the challenge to all Newfoundland students for the Tsuruoka Nationals!  Are you up for it????
