Ettiquette

In traditional martial arts, the dojo (“place of the way”) is understood to be a special space, different from the other spaces of day-to-day experience. Dojo etiquette and protocol reflect our respect for tradition, our commitment to train together diligently, and our readiness to focus all our attention on the work at hand. It is important to learn these protocols, follow them, and contemplate their meaning.

  • Be on time.
  • All students must bow on and off the dojo floor.
  • All outdoor clothing must be hung up properly.
  • Heel of all outdoor footwear must be place neatly against the wall.
  • Always keep your uniform (gi) clean and neat.
  • Tie your belt (obi) neatly with both ends at equal lengths.
  • All jewellery must be removed.
  • All female students must wear white crew neck t-shirts under their gi.
  • All finger and toe nails must be clipped short. Females may keep longer finger nails but only with care.
  • Long hair must be tie back neatly.
  • Arm crossing, hands on hips or sitting with legs stretched out is inappropriate.
  • Always bow to your training partner.
  • Reply to feedback given by the Instructor with a strong and spirited “Oss”.
  • Inform the instructor before class if you are on any medication or have any minor injuries that may affect your training.
  • Higher belts must assist lower belts.
  • Always thank the person who just helped you.
  • Never criticize another dojo, style or teacher.
  • Keep the dojo clean and even if it is not your mess.
  • Return all equipment to its proper place when you are finished using it.
  • It is impolite to leave class before it is over without permission. If possible, make arrangements with your Instructor before class begins.
  • Let your instructor(s) know if you will be absent from the dojo for a prolonged period of time.
